Job ……..

cuts straight to the heart of what it means to be human.  It is the most profound exploration of the life of faith and wrestles with some of life's most perplexing questions. Why do bad things happen to good people?

For ME that was  December, 1976.  That night is a fresh on my mind as if it happened yesterday.  Our first child (Debra)  was dead and Betty was in critical condition.  That night as I lay in bed, I knew that within 24 hours Betty could be dead as well.

As I lay in bed starring at the ceiling, I felt so alone.  I knew that by the next night, the finality would be reality.   At the age of 23, would I be facing two graves?  One was heart breaking enough.

As I lay there, I began to question God.  WHY?  Why did this happen to us?  I knew first hand the agony of the word WHY.  I wish I could tell you that I was a “JOB”, “Lord though you slay me, I will worship you!”   I was far from Job.   Worship was the last thing on my mind.

Betty did survive and was very weak when we buried our child on     December 7, 1976.  It a cold, bitter, windy day as we helped Betty to the grave.  Then when she collapsed, I grabbed her, picked her up,  looked at my parents and then looked up into the heavens.  I am so glad I did not vocalize what I was thinking about God.

Later I discovered the book of Job.  In the following months I learned to respect job.  The book of Job is as relevant today as it was then.  I am sure most of you have been there as well.     Starring at the ceiling, the darkness of the room is like a dark blanket that smothers you, life seems so senseless, yet there was a belief deep inside that says I have a God, I have a Savior that loves me…… but WHY?  That is what we will be learning from the book of Job.  We will be looking at questions and answers that apply to your life today.

One more thing, God spoke to me that night.  Was it in an audible voice?  No, but it was very clear.   In much the same way, it was the answer God gave to Job and it didn’t come with flowers and a box of candy.  It was direct and gave me more wisdom about life than anything ever since.  More about that later.

This Spring, our Sermon Series on Sunday Mornings will be the book of JOB.  I believe you will discover truths each week that will enhance your life.   They will be like nuggets of gold that will bring you into a proper understanding of life and what a mighty God we serve.

Will you join us each Sunday as we study “JOB: The AGONY OF WHY?”
